LAWA Scholarship Award Ceremony
Latin Americans Working for Achievement (formerly the Latin American Women’s Association) is hosting an award ceremony for higher education scholarship recipients. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 10 at the Mint Museum Randolph.
Among the scholarships awarded is the Deborah Aguiar-Velez Scholarship, in honor of a community member that passed away last year. In lieu of flowers, her family requested that donations were made to LAWA, among other local organizations. The scholarship will be awarded each year to an outstanding female student pursuing a career in the STEM fields, following the footsteps of Mrs. Aguiar-Velez.
Another award is the Marand Scholarship, sponsored by Francisco Alvarado, the founder and CEO of Marand Builders. Mr. Alvarado hopes to give back to the Charlotte community where he began his company. The scholarship was awarded to three students pursuing careers in engineering.
Philanthropic support in Charlotte has continued to grow, demonstrating the Latino community’s commitment to higher education. For the 2017-18 academic year, LAWA was able to award $40,500 to Charlotte students.
In total, twenty-two students will be awarded scholarships on June 10 for their outstanding academic achievements, cultural heritage and financial need.
