Charlotte, August 5th, 2024 – Latin Americans Working for Achievement (LAWA), a leading nonprofit dedicated to advancing the quality of life and education of Latinos, is thrilled to announce the appointment of Daniela Izurieta as the new CEO and President of the company, effective August 28, 2024.

Daniela Izurieta’s extensive background prepares her with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by Latino families, making her well-suited to drive LAWA’s mission forward. Originally from Quito, Ecuador, Daniela has been a Charlotte resident since 2003, holding both a BA from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Master’s from UNC-Charlotte.

Daniela’s decade-long career as a public school counselor demonstrated her commitment to student academic success and mental health, addressing the unique needs of her students with empathy and expertise. Following her successful tenure in public education, Daniela transitioned to the nonprofit sector, focusing on college access for first-generation students.

“I am honored to join LAWA and lead such an impactful organization. As a first-generation LAWA scholar, I relied heavily on mentors and the community to achieve my educational goals, and as CEO of LAWA, my goal now is to enable other students to reach theirs. The experience and journey that brings me to this role cement my belief that supporting and investing in our community is crucial in developing young talent and advancing the education and quality of life of Latinos in the Charlotte region,” said Daniela Izurieta. “I look forward to working with our dedicated team and Board, as well as our community sponsors, donors, and partners as we continue building on the strong foundation established by previous leadership. Together, we will advance and expand the reach of LAWA to benefit the Latino community in NC.”

Daniela’s leadership will be valuable in advancing LAWA’s commitment to supporting Latino families in the Charlotte region. Her appointment is expected to bring new perspectives and innovative approaches to the organization’s efforts to improve educational outcomes and quality of life for the community.

We are excited to welcome Daniela to LAWA. Our organization is focused on investing in the Charlotte region by supporting Latino families in high school and college education,” said Elizabeth Sturgill, LAWA Board Chair. “Having a former LAWA scholar as the leader of our organization is a testament to our success. Her passion and leadership will enable LAWA to continue investing in Charlotte’s future.”
